What Are Dental Crowns?

At Karen Dental Clinic in Nairobi, our expertly crafted dental crowns provide long-lasting protection while blending seamlessly with your natural teeth.

A dental crown is a custom-made “cap” placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns encase the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline, providing protection and reinforcement.

Our Crown Materials

Gold Alloy Crowns

Extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth, gold crowns are an excellent option for back teeth where strength is paramount.

All-Resin Crowns

A more affordable option, though typically not as durable as other materials.

Zirconia Crowns

Combining exceptional strength with natural appearance, these modern crowns are becoming increasingly popular.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

Combining strength and aesthetics, these crowns have a metal base for durability with a porcelain exterior that mimics natural tooth color.

Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns

These provide the most natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. The color is carefully matched to your existing teeth for a seamless result.

Our Three-Step Crown Treatment Process

From initial consultation to final placement, we’ve streamlined every step to make restoring your smile remarkably simple.

  • Assessment and Planning

We begin with a thorough examination of your tooth, discussing your needs and preferences for material options.

  • Preparation

We gently prepare your tooth by removing damaged areas and reshaping it to accommodate your crown.

  • Crown Placement and Verification

We'll carefully position the permanent crown. After checking for proper fit, bite alignment, and appearance, we permanently secure the crown with strong dental cement.

Everything You Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Does getting a crown hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you feel no pain during the tooth preparation. Most patients report feeling only mild pressure during the process. After the anesthesia wears off, you might experience minor sensitivity for a few days, easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Our gentle techniques and attention to your comfort make the experience much more pleasant than many anticipate.
How long does the crown process take?
The entire process typically requires two appointments spaced about 2 weeks apart. The first appointment (preparation and impressions) usually takes 60-90 minutes, while the final placement appointment takes approximately 30-45 minutes. We offer same-day crowns for certain situations, allowing the entire process to be completed in a single visit of about 2 hours.
Will my crown look fake or unnatural?
Yes, one of the significant advantages of Invisalign is that you can remove your aligners to eat and drink. This means no food restrictions. However, it's important to brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners. Avoid drinking anything other than water while wearing your aligners to prevent staining.
Can I still get cavities with a crown?
While the crown itself cannot decay, the natural tooth structure underneath it remains susceptible to cavities, particularly at the margin where the crown meets the tooth. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene—brushing twice daily, flossing around the crown, and attending regular dental check-ups—will help prevent decay and ensure your crown lasts for many years.
