What is a dental crown?
A crown, or a cap, is used in the restoration of parts of teeth damaged by breakage, decay or to protect a root filling and even to hold dentures in place. They are usually made of porcelain (Porcelain bonded and porcelain crowns), ceramics, or gold. All-ceramic crowns are metal-free varieties of crowns available while gold alloy crowns come in silver and gold colors. The rest come in white.
How long does it take to get a dental crown fitted?
On the first appointment day, you will have your tooth prepared; impressions will be taken of the tooth so that an appropriate crown in the same color and shape of your crown can be made. After one or two weeks, you will have another appointment where the permanent crown will be fitted.
Caring for dental crowns:
Just like your natural teeth, dental crowns need to be cared for. While the crown will not decay, the rest of your tooth could decay without proper care. We recommend that you brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily and floss at least once a day.
